Hands on the Sands

5th March 2022

The Hands on the Sands event was advertised on Facebook as a fundraiser and awareness campaign for BEAT Eating Disorders charity. The organisers asked for swimmers to hold hands on Weymouth beach before going into the sea for a swim at 10.15pm. Two locations were given, The groyne rocks at Greenhill and Overcombe.

I decided to join in the event but chose the Overcombe end to park my car as did many others. We soon realised that the line of hands was meant to start from the other end of the beach and we would not have had enough time to walk to the other end. So around 30 – 40 swimmers decided to join hands at the other end of the beach next to the Look Out Cafe. Swimmers had travelled from Somerset to join in, and a group of people who swim regularly with the Mental Health Swims group were there to take part. I don’t think it mattered at all as everyone was friendly happy and smiling!

A large black cloud loomed over us, but the rain stayed away, the sea sparkled and everyone was kind to one another.
