Today, there were signs of the re-emergence of sailing activities in Portland Harbour as a large crane was moving yachts from their winter berths into the sea. Castle Cove Sailing Club’s moorings are empty during the winter so, the horizon that I see whilst swimming will look very different after today, as the boats return to their moorings. A high spring tide allowed enough depth for the largest yachts to be launched. It was a really calm and sunny morning and the air temperature had dropped below freezing overnight but was about 4°C when I arrived for my swim at about 9 A.M.
The water felt cooler than it has been during my recent swims here, as the incoming tide would have moved across the cold sand during the night. If you swim on an incoming tide in the evening, after the sand has been in sunshine all day, then it is much warmer. It was a beautiful swim and very uplifting for me.
